A to Z: What Is a Hammam and Everything You Need to Know About It

Everything You Need to Know About Hammam

The hammam, also known as a Turkish or Oriental bath, is a centuries-old wellness ritual that combines heat, steam, cleansing, and relaxation. More than just a spa treatment, the hammam is a deeply rooted cultural tradition designed to purify the body, calm the mind, and restore balance.

After a hammam, you will feel completely relaxed and refreshed. There is no better investment in your well-being than spending time in a hammam.

Whether you are experiencing it for the first time or returning for its many benefits, here is everything you need to know about the hammam.

What Does a Hammam Service Look Like?

A typical hammam session follows several carefully designed steps:

Warm Steam Relaxation

You begin by spending time in a warm, steamy room. The heat opens your pores, softens the skin, and prepares your body for deep cleansing. At Sultan Spa, we provide full privacy to every client, and you do not share the steam room or any hammam facilities with other guests.

At Sultan Spa, there is also a dry sauna and a jacuzzi where guests can enjoy private sessions (hijab-friendly).

Black Soap (beldi) Application

A natural argan-oil-based black soap is applied to the skin (Diamond Package). This soap helps loosen dead skin cells and impurities. This soap is made of black olives and argan oil and it is typical for a Maroccan hammam protocol.

Exfoliation (Kessa Glove Scrub)

Using a traditional exfoliating glove, the therapist gently removes dead skin, leaving your skin smooth and refreshed. During this process, you lie on a heated stone and enjoy the feeling of warm water being poured over your body, along with the silkiness of a foam cloud created by the therapist in a very choreographed manner.

Rinsing and Cleansing

The body is rinsed with warm water to remove impurities and soap residue.

Optional Add-Ons

Our hammam rituals at Sultan Spa include a foam massage, a micronized sea algae body mask, or nourishing oils for extra hydration and relaxation. For example, during the Diamond Package, the therapist will apply a special scrub called “Diamond,” made from organic coconut oil and rice powder. This scrub is enriched with essential lavender oil, which helps calm the nervous system.
